The criminal case files are incomplete, unbound case papers filed in criminal proceedings held in the U.S. District Court for the Territory of Dakota, Second Judicial District, seated at Yankton. The cases brought on indictment or bill of complaint relate to violations of Federal and territorial law. Most case files contain copies of the bill of indictment or information instituting the action and occasionally include writs, subpoenas, warrants, praecipes, transcripts from the U.S. Commissioners courts, transcripts of testimony, demurrers, verdicts, and sentences. There are no records for the April term 1868, November term 1869, April term 1870, or April term 1883.
